Community

Steelersincommunity_80617Steelergurl, like many in Steeler Nation believes in giving back to our communities – whether through financial contributions or volunteerism, it takes more than one person to make a community great.

Therefore, Steelergurl urges all those in Steeler Nation to get involved.

Her charity of choice is the Pittsburgh Foundation.

The Pittsburgh Foundation is the 14th largest community foundation in the country. Since 1945, it has worked to improve the quality of life in the Pittsburgh region by evaluating and addressing community issues, promoting charitable giving, and connecting donors to the critical needs of the community.

The Foundation allows donors to give to the organization of their choice.

Community Fund grants at the Pittsburgh Foundation are awarded in five targeted areas:

  • achieving educational excellence and equity
  • fostering economic development
  • supporting families, children and youth
  • reducing disparities in health outcomes
  • advancing the arts

The Pittsburgh Foundation also supports a Responsiveness Fund which makes unrestricted grants in these areas.

Several of the Steelers also have their charitable programs through the Pittsburgh Foundation.

Max Starks Charitable Fund supports children’s literacy and education programs throughout the Pittsburgh region.

Hines Ward’s Helping Hands Foundation also focuses on literacy programs in Western PA specifically targeting children from single-parent households.  In addition, Hines’ Foundation has an international component – raising awareness of the prejudice against mixed race Asian children in Korea.

After visiting the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC following Super Bowl XL, Troy Polamalu and his wife, Theodora decided to start the Harry Panos Fund in honor of Theodora’s grandfather, a WWII veteran.  This Fund will provide assistance to veterans returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, often with serious injuries.
