Oregon WR Jamere Holland booted
Monday, 22 February 2010 09:21

What the heck is going on in Eugene these days??  Among all of the arrests over the past month, the news that Holland was kicked off the team for an explicit Facebook post just keeps the fires burning.  The trouble started when Holland assumed Kristian Kiko Alonso was kicked off the team after being arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

The first post read (from Oregonlive.com):

"How you (expletive) kick kinko (sic) off the team on some weak (expletive). ... he slipped up but ive been slippn up, and I'm still here, that (expletive) ... could damage for the ducks, that (expletive) is weak, weak (expletive), quote me."

Soon after, he posted another update:

"chilln thinking of another status to (expletive) with the readers heads, I wish I could block whites as friends and only have blacks LOL, cause apparently I'm misunderstood."

Expletives and racism aside, challenging your coach probably isn't the smartest thing to do when you have 17 career catches.  I know we've discussed this topic before but when will these guys start to understand the dangers of social media?  I follow a lot of college athletes on Twitter and I truly can't believe they haven't been taken aside and trained on this topic.  I'm not going to throw these guys under the bus for this little ole blog but knowing most won't be playing pro ball, how can they not realize that future employers will look back on these posts one day?  For the guys who do make it, character issues have come front and center for many teams and if this material is out there, the chances of getting passed over are very real unless a top tier player which most aren't.

The Holland comments are nothing compared to what I see most days in the way of racism, sexism and language by these players.  I'm not naive enough to believe that every person out there is an angel, my language is far from sparkling offline but I know that every word I type has the potential of being seen by anyone with an internet connection and a willingness to read them (not to mention stored for eternity).  It would take very little effort for each team to have a quick afternoon meeting on the topic so this one really leaves me scratching my head.

Colt McCoy - No championship but one hell of a consolation prize.

Big League Screw is reporting today that University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is getting married to recent internet sensation Rachel Glandorf.  While you may be wondering why I even care about this story, let me explain...

Oh, Brian, won't you...?
Friday, 20 November 2009 06:35

Towards the end of each college football season, I usually start to watch, with some enjoyment, the sick version of musical chairs that comes with college coaches getting fired or moving on.  This year it worries me a little bit more, since Brian Kelly is on the lips of every athletic director from Miami to Spokane.

While I'd love to be able to take him at his word about being set and happy in Cincinnati, I've been burned too often in the last few years to accept it.  I'm talking to you, Thad Matta and Sean Miller.  By the way, Thad, next time you say you're not interviewing for a new position, try not to be seen sneaking into that college's arena the next day through the service door.

Anyway, with the probable number of head coaching spots at big schools being pretty big this year, I'm sweating it a little more than usual.  Should anyone tell Kelly he can't advance his career?  No, of course not.  Does he deserve to be rewarded for what he's done?  Without question, and all those new practice facilities and extra salary are part of that.  Still, there are going to be people come knocking, and I'm afraid the allure might be too much for him.

Charlie Weis is done at Notre Dame.  There are few schools with a more storied and revered football program in this country.  The Irish started strong, but now they're melting down again.  The Navy losses alone are enough to cause many alumni and boosters to call for his ouster, and don't think for a minute that those check writers don't get a vote in the process.

Had he not started out of the gate with them, muttering through his gravy fries about how they'll never lose to Michigan State, and then losing to them and many others, or accepting a giant contract extension too early (paging Mr. Willingham, Mr. Willingham!), his job might be more secure.  It was pretty much over for him in 2007, and I have to believe that the potential payout is the only reason he's there this season.  Enjoy it, Charlie.  It's your last in South Bend.

The Irish are all-but-officially a Big 10 team, and they'll likely make it official in the next few years.  Look for them to make a hire that puts them back on par with Ohio State.  Just don't make it Brian Kelly.

The other obvious Big 10 possibility for Kelly is Michigan.  Rich Rod, not only are you a total piece of shit of a human being, but you've lead a previously proud and successful program (I still hate them, of course)  into the ground in short order.  You showed your true colors at WVU, abandoning your team before the season was even over.

Now you have the NCAA breathing down your neck, your players are calling you out and transferring, and your excuses are wearing thin.  Good luck in the future, working as an equipment manager at whatever IIIA school that will have you.

Oh, by the way, WVU is still expecting the first payment of the 1.5 million you owe them for being a prick early next year, regardless of whether you're a head coach or in charge of the fries at the Burger King in Ypsilanti.

Anyway, while I don't think it would be easy for Kelly to resist an offer from Big Blue, I also don't think they're going to hang everything on another Big East coach this soon after this mess.  Kelly has way more class then Rich Rod ever will, but he might also be hesitant to set himself up for the issues he'd inherit even if they did make an offer.

The USS Mark Mangino will  almost certainly be setting sail from Lawrence, after blaming the team's problems on the players and their parents.  He's done fairly well there, but he can't win in the conference, and now he's accused of man-handling his players.  You just can't do that these days.  It's one thing if you're winning, but you're not.  In his defense, to the players complaining about "verbal abuse", suck it up.  There's no crying in football.

He was also able to clear up the issues he had with so many parking tickets on campus when he was able to show that it wasn't his car parked illegally, but rather it was just him, the size of a VW minibus, taking a break from walking to his office.

Even with Texas and Texas Tech in the conference, I can't see Kelly considering that a move up from the "new" Big East.  At least I hope he wouldn't.  Plus, he's always worked around here, and in the eastern part of the country we're suspicious of the kind of football they play out there in the great plains.

So, Brian Kelly, please consider staying in Cincinnati, even though you'll be wined and dined by every formerly reputable program in the country.  We've paid you lots, we've made the upgrades you wanted, and you'll be getting Zach Collaros back next year, if he's not in jail for passing a fake ID.  Cincinnati is a proud sports town, and UC is as large and well funded as any college in the country.  I know, I'm a grad.

Oh, Brian, won't you be our Woody Hayes, our Bo Schembechler, our JoPa?  Just let me know what you want.  I'm sure we can provide for whatever needs you have (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).  I'm well connected, you know.

Quick Note on Navy Game

No Heisman Talk for Jimmy Clausen?
Wednesday, 07 October 2009 17:46

Yes, tailgate fans, I am a hardcore, crazy Notre Dame football fan, DEAL WITH IT! Anyway, what really has me concerned with the mindset of many of the college football anaylists on ESPN and various other networks is the fact that Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen is left out of the candidates for Heisman hopefuls.  Are you kidding me? Now I know that every one gets NBC and has taken a sneak peak at the Fighting Irish when they play on Saturdays.  Let me just say, from a fan that was very critical of Clausen during his early playing time at Notre Dame, the guy is a STUD!

Think about it, fans, and look at the stats.  Four out of the five games he has played, Clausen has thrown for over 300+ yards.  His highest coming against the Washington Huskies of 422 yards with a completion percentage of 74.2 percent. His entire highlight real for the Heisman should be the amazing comeback win over Purdue as he lead the Irish down the field 80 yards for the game winning touchdown, with an injuried toe (don't start laughing, it's very hard to plant the foot with an injuried toe).
Clausen has grown up a lot from his early playing days at Notre Dame and he has become a great field general.  Charlie Weiss has surrounded him with great talent like Golden Tate, Armondo Allen, and Kyle Rudolf to help spread the ball around. I leave you with Clausen's 2009 stats as of right now and pose the question to Heisman voters out there: why not?

Buckeye Fans: Stop Whining
Tuesday, 06 October 2009 08:26

I've had about enough of the Buckeye fans around here badmouthing the Bearcats for leapfrogging them in the rankings.
"Well, just look at the schedules!", they whine.  OK, you mean the schedule where OSU nearly got beaten by Navy, at home?  Or do you mean the upcoming game against New Mexico State?  At home.  Or that MAC powerhouse, Toledo?

We share one common opponent: Illinois.  Want to base it on the victory margin for that team?  Or is there just not enough room in Ohio for you guys to have TWO ranked teams?

Look, I'm a huge OSU fan, too, but don't give me this crap about strength of schedule and such.  You have one of the biggest, if not THE biggest budget of any NCAA team in the country, you pretty much get your pick of recruits from around the country and you have better facilities than many NFL teams.  You're supposed to play good teams.  The fact that you can't beat ranked opponents is your problem.  Don't get down on the Bearcats for doing more with less.

Don't forget, I was there at Paul Brown Stadium a few years ago when they were one blown holding call away from wrecking your perfect season.  I was one of maybe eight people there in Bearcats attire, sitting over the end zone, and I saw those then-unranked 'Cats match your juiced-up squad play for play.

Anyway, if you want we can just settle it head-to-head, but I warn you: Brian Kelly's son already beat OSU with UC, 91-0, on his Playstation.
