Is Ray Really Leaving…Or Playing The Free Agent Game?

Is this the end for Ray Lewis in Baltimore?

I’m always amused when athletes get to the ends of their contracts and are either on the verge of, or have entered their free agency period. There’s always a dance that goes on, where the athlete either can’t wait to get out on the market or wants to stay with the team he’s been playing for-and vice versa, when the ownership professes love for the athlete and wants him to stay, or keeps silent letting outsiders guess at his and the team’s true motivations. Such is the case with the pending free agency of Ray Lewis, the heart and soul of the Baltimore Ravens.

Given his recent quote that “I don’t play less, therefore I don’t get paid less,” it would be easy for Ravens fans to think that the sky is falling, that Ray is on his way out. And given his recent comments that he thinks that the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets are good situations for him, it would be easy for Ravens fans to feel that Ray is on his way out of town as fast as he can scare up a deal. Meanwhile, since Steve Bisciotti’s news conference after the season where he basically proclaimed his love for Ray and his wishes that he would stay in the organization, mum’s the word from ownership.

Ravens 365 and Stet Sports Blog have recent posts that give interesting insight on whether Ray will stay or go. It’s still early in the game, but we’ll see what happens from here on out. I don’t think he goes anywhere, but I also don’t think that the Ravens should ruin their financial house just to keep him, either. Yes, he’s a very important piece of Ravens history, and it’s hard to see him in another uniform. If he’s not willing to take the “hometown discount,” whatever that may be, Ray may very well be gone. Yet he may look out there and find that leaving “his city,” as he called it, isn’t something he’s really interested in, particularly if the Ravens make a fair offer.

The Ravens also have some other interesting decisions to make. Terrell Suggs and Jason Brown and Jim Leonhard and Bart Scott are also free agents. How many of them do they keep or let go? And how do they make keeping them work while keeping Ray Lewis and prices salaries that are good for the players and the ballclub? Time will tell.

  2. The Ravens need Ray back more than any team has ever needed anyone back. He is their MVP and their coach.

Here is an article that proves my point.
