Siena Saints Guard Kenny Hasbrouck Interview
Friday, 20 March 2009 05:01

Former Siena lacrosse player Jim Mikel caught up with Kenny Hasbrouck this week as he prepares for their opening round game against Ohio State.  Good luck to Kenny and the Saints.

JM - Being a Maryland boy, why did you decide to come to Siena, a smaller school in Albany, New York?
KH - I mainly decided to come to Siena because coach promised me that I would get the ball in my hands my freshmen year and wouldn't have to sit and wait like I would in bigger schools. I was going to be able to play in the Pepsi arena which now called the TU center. The experience that the coaching staff and how they seemed to have a family orientated style which still holds true.

JM - If Siena wasn't in the picture when you were looking at schools, where would you have ended up?
KH - I would have gone to either Richmond or Rhode Island.

JM -Playing for a small school like Siena and still drawing multi thousand person crowds a night is very impressive, how much does it mean to you and your team knowing that the student body and community is 100% behind you?
KH - It's a great feeling and it is one of the main reasons I chose the school.

JM - What is your favorite thing about Siena, the classes, the townhouses, the student body, the girls.... And so on?
KH - My favorite thing is environment at Siena. The environment is great and it allows me to be myself and almost live care free which is opposite of where I am from.

JM - I know I love playing NCAA on my 360 and I always play with the Saints, so be honest have you ever played and if so is number 41 taking most of the shots?
KH - To be honest I haven't, I've watched other people play and I tell them to keep feeding me the ball but I just can't play video games because it's not real enough.

JM - Being a Siena alum and a former Siena Athlete, I know how good the staff and school is to us. How has this helped you and your teammates become the success that you are?
KH - Well our trainers and weight trainer have been great at keeping us in great physical strength and making sure we don't have nagging injuries throughout the year. Also not only have they helped with that, they have also been great people to be around because we consider Hammer and Jill our trainers and Dan (DT) our weight trainer close friends.

JM - How much pressure are you and your teammates feeling knowing that many people have great expectations for you going into this year's tourney?
KH - People give us very little pressure because we expect the same from ourselves. We know how good we are and that we have a chance to be a great team so we will not settle for less.

JM -How do you think your success in last year's tourney will help or hurt you in this year's?
KH - It helped me because it put me on the national map but at the same time I was a targeted player this year which made me struggle early in the year.

JM - In your opinion do you think Coach McCaffery will stick around at Siena for the long haul and turn it into a perennial Mid-major power like a Butler or Xavier, or will he leave for a bigger program and a bigger pay check?
KH - I think he will make the decision that is best for him and his family. I hope he does stick around and continue to help Siena grow but he is a great coach so he could find a better place for his family and himself.

JM -How important has Coach McCaffery been in your development as a player?
KH - I think Coach Mac was the best thing to happen to me because he understood my playing style when I came in and allowed me to keep my style in his system while I got better.

JM - What was the greatest moment in you Siena career?
KH - My greatest moment was when we won the 09 MAAC championship my last time on the TU center floor.
