In a game that odd circumstances forced fans to stay home and the University of Maryland fill sits with students, the Terrapins ran up and down on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Maryland wound up crushing the Tar Heels by a score of 92-71. To add insult to getting dominated, the Maryland fans chanted “N-I-T” at the defending champion Tar Heels.
Greivis Vasquez led the way with 23 points and 11 assists. Vasquez played well, but at times did take some wild shots that have frustrated me over his career. His play was slightly wild, but he played under control enough to lead his team.
Also, chipping in were Landon Milbourne and Eric Hayes. The common thread between Vasquez, Milbourne and Hayes is they are senior classmates. They have been playing well together since the ACC season started and I don’t see them looking back.
The one player that has really been complimenting the senior class well is freshman Jordan Williams. Vasquez has been feeding Williams the ball and Sunday was no different. Williams finished off several passes from Vasquez and the other guards. However, his impact was more on the defensive end. Williams’ defense was stifling for North Carolina’s interior players and forced the Heels to shoot long threes.
In the end, it added up to Maryland’s domination of North Carolina and moving the Terps in to second place all by themselves at 6-2, only a half game behind Duke. The next two games for the Terps will be telling as they host Virginia and pay Duke a visit. If they sweep that puts them in real good shape for the conference tournament, if they split they will get another shot at both teams in ACC games 15 and 16.
