Pretty sure companions cannot be killed by anyone but you. So if yours is dead it means you probably accidentally hacked, shot or incinerated them.

I have stuck with Lydia but the orc dude and the ex-evil mage from down by Riften have tempted me.

Mine died, but I don't think it was me. I think she was raised by a head vampire and then I killed her after she was undead... idk. I was pot shotting with my bow of souls and could have clipped her. All I found was an ash pile.

I think that is true of quest related companions. But I've had several that have been killed by bandits, dragons, and in fires within sight of firehouses.

Do you just hire them in town then? I only had Lydia...

Lydia got waxed by some vampires or mages. They were fairly high level.

You guys are hard on companioins. You realize it's you who is probably killing them, right? Once they kneel, enemies ignore them.

I thought this was hilarious, though. I have restarted many times to resurrect Lydia.

As long as they are not neccessary to the storyline, they can be killed. They can all be killed. Lydia dies because you get her early, so she is good early, but then starts to suck when you get to stronger foes. The companion level is tied in to your level, when you first meat them. They can die by friendly fire also.

I put in some Skyrim time this weekend and I have a question. I have ran into a couple of enemies who seemed just over and above my level. Is there some problem with scaling enemies, or are there just some enemies that you HAVE to beat with ranged weapons? Last night I stopped (gave up) on an Azura quest where I got sent inside a soul gem to kill this wizard. The enemies are beyond fucking impossible. I don't have any ranged skills at all, just a big damn hammer but these wizards in here have some kind of super fireball spell, each one takes off 1/3 of my health and they fire them off rapid fire. It's fucking bullshit

Also in a dungeon called Volskagg or something like that, at the very end of the dungeon there is a "Lich King of Death" or something like that, the guy fucks me up every time. Finally I ran past him and got outside, there is a word wall and when I get the word this fucking ghost named something like Voldemort spawns and beats the shit out of me. He stays away from me and moves way too fast to hit with my hammer. I finally just ran down the mountain and got the hell away from him

They made it like that on purpose. Some quests and enemies are best left until you level up your skills more

Or maybe your guy is just better suited to working in one of Skyrim's many folksy craft establishments.

So if I level up a bit and come back, they won't have leveled with me? That's good news. I thought they'd scale up along with me and remain unbeatable.
