The thread on keyboard/mouse seems more about hardware, but I'd like to know HOW you guys actually control/play the game because I'll probably find out that I'm making things to hard on myself.

For my mouse, the only thing special I have configured is that one of the two thumb buttons is now my mic key for Ventrilo. As a result of this, when I'm on a conference call at work, I now attempt to key the mic on my mouse whenever I'm talking.

My keyboard is just the standard configuration. I don't press any buttons outside of the WASD movement keys (and Q&E for strafing). In combat, I target with my mouse and I select my attacks with my mouse.

While I'm not prepared to buy some fancy gaming keyboard or mouse with 12 buttons on the side, I'm wondering if there is a "tighter" way I could be playing.

I run mostly using all mouse[both mouse buttons], bind z,x as strafe[Thumb]. Tab to switch targets with my pinky. Use number keys[other fingers] and bind my other skills in Quickslots using alt/ctrl/shift [thumb] + # for skills and try and group them based on what they do moving less used skills farther down the keyboard. I enabled the center bottom slot and bound all those to alt + # and put my close range stuff down there. # keys by themselves are ranged. CTRL + # for toggling stuff like stealth or healing.

I don't know if its ideal or not but it works for me. If you search mouseturning on youtube there are some videos out there but I can't keybind to anything but numbers or my brain vomits and they bind to the letters around w,a,s,d or e,s,d,f for skills and bind the keys to turn as strafe instead and use the mouse to help turn. I tried to find the one I watched last week that did a good job of explaining, I just can't operate that way. Will keep looking.

More and more I've been choosing my touchpad over my mouse. I have a large touchpad and drivers that let me right-click by tapping the touchpad with two fingers. Unlike a mouse, the touchpad is always in the same place in relation to my quickslot keys. Clicking and dragging does not work well; if I need lots of camera control I still use my mouse.

I've enabled all of the quickbars. My right quickbar has rarely used powers and some mission items. My left quickbar has all speed/movement powers. The Mount Speeder command is mapped to Ctrl+Shift+S.

I keep my most used power in the first slot of the main quick bar so it will also be mapped to right-click. Powers that are often cast together are grouped together in the center and bottom-center quickbars. Shift+1, Shift+2, etc are mapped to the bottom-center quickslots. Activating powers with keyboard commands can be significantly more efficient than activating powers by clicking on the icons.

As a healer I need to be able to quickly target companions in the heat of battle. I mapped some companion targeting things to the Function keys but I need to review and expand those mappings.

Just to kinda add to how my control config turned out that way. I used to do arrows for all movement and click all skills. Then I realized both mouse buttons run and started doing that out of laziness. When I got into some bigger stuff clicking on enemies got really hard for targeting and started using only Tab for enemies and Shift-Tab for Friendlies. My other fingers kinda just fell on 1,2,3 so I started putting the stuff I used most there and expanded from that. Lotro binds the additional bars to ALT/CTRL/Shift so I started adding stuff to those slots trying to keep my most used stuff on 1-5 or Alt+1-5. I just started using z,x for strafe in conjunction with the mouse for circle strafing but like it. I will be getting a new mouse with at least two extra buttons and will bind either ALT/CTRL or strafing to those. I am thinking strafe so all movement is controlled by the mouse. Sorry if its a bit repetative just wanted to kinda clarify the mentality of it so it may be more helpful. I will try and find the videos I watched the other day about keybinding and mouse-turning vs clicking. They are not what I do but its seems like people have found them useful.
