Star Wars Debate

Postby Jammer » May 27th, 2010, 9:09 am

So over the weekend at my parents' house, Star Wars movies were running on Spike. My oldest daughter (6 1/2) was with my Dad and Empire Strikes Back was on. To my happiness she was interested in the movie and asked if we had them at home. Now first me being protective parent I thought she is too young, but then remembered that I was 5 in the theater when Star Wars first came out.

That brought an interesting discussion between my Dad and I. Do you start with Episode 1 or Episode 4? Now I know the recent movies weren't too good compared to the first three but if she wants to watch them, might as well go through all 6. Lucas has said to watch them beginning with Episode 1 but then I think of certain things in the movie that wouldn't be a surprise then (such as Yoda revealing himself or Vader telling Luke he is his father). So just wondering what everybody's opinion is here on where to start.

start with 1, it pisses me off every time I hear a kid/teen talk about 1-3 as if they were actually the "first" ones, but it makes the story make more sense

we were spoiled, we knew the ending before the beginning

also make sure they know Jar Jar is the worst character in any film ever and the entire series shouldn't be based on opinion from him

You have to watch from Episode I...actually, I would start at the last 15 minutes of Ep I and go forward...the rest of the movie is subpar.

I think you have to start with 4-6 and then go back to 1-3. Episode 4 introduces you to things because its the first time you have seen it. Episode 1 just throws stuff at you because they expect you to know everything already.

Start with 4, that way you get the surprise at the end of Empire that Vader is Simba's father.

I went with 1 instead though I agree with your point. Lucas however does not.... :D

I read an interview with Rick McCallum (producer of the prequels) that in 2012-ish, they are going to do another animated TV series (like Clone Wars) that picks up after episode VI.
