I think they feared that Elton John couldn't carry the entire episode on his own as a host & musical performer.

I thought the shot-put sketch was very funny. They've done that sketch before & those two announcers are hilarious. And the sponsor is always some sort of quasi-sexual (often feminine) product.

Carmelo just didn't add anything to the sketches he was in. Other than SNL pandering to Knicks fans.
