Would you watch it?

Talk about movies and TV...errrrr

Would you watch it?

Postby lotus » March 4th, 2011, 3:34 pm

I've been reading Al Jazeera's English news site (http://english.aljazeera.net/) for a while and I have to say, it has been surprisingly balanced and filled with actual news. It has been making me frustrated that nobody in this country will carry their English TV signal, since somebody accused them of being affiliated with terrorists and of endorsing torture. Neither are true, by the way.

Anyway, would you watch it if it was on? I already try to catch BBC World News when I can because it is so much more spin-free compared to US news outlets and I can easily see myself watching this one as well. The quality of their reporting is great, and the English language division is generally all westerners anyway.

Is their image too tainted in this country to ever be added to cable or satellite programming?

To answer your last question: More than likely it has been too tainted due to the prior allegations of affiliation with terrorism. Not saying it's right, but that's the world we live in.

I'm not sure if I'd watch anyhow, because I barely have time to catch BBCA's news cast here and there. I'm more likely to check Reuters, the AP, and the BBC site for my news now, because I just want facts, not the blustery bullshit that both sides of news in the US bring to the table.

I think it's great and I know others who think so as well. The majority of Americans are going to think "isnt that the network that showed be-headings?" No, no its not. They never have and catch all the hell anytime a negative video comes from the Middle East even though most times it's not even their video.

It's not just in the US either. There have been numerous (alleged) attempts by M.E. countries to take them down because of their open and honest approach.

This has been a real issue for them over the last couple of months. Governments in the middle east have been blocking, moving or scrambling their signal to prevent people from seeing what is going on for realz in their streets.

Well, and our government, too.

As they say on Firefly, "You can't stop the signal". I don't think that we, in the west, appreciate what a serious information institution Al Jazeera has become, and not just in the middle east. It's my opinion that our biases are blinding us to a really valuable resource that, in many cases might refute what we're being told about what's going on over there.

You know what kills me? We have become so much of a head in the sand society as far as differing views, that people have subjected themselves to a self censorship that would impress even the most staunch of oppressive regimes. Whether people are watching Fox News, MSNBC, or CNN, they completely refuse to believe there is another side to any given story, no matter how many facts come out to destroy a ridiculously biased report that appears on one of those channels. The part that amazes me is that the real information is so plentiful and literally available with the press of a finger, yet people want to sit there and say "NA NA NA NA....I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" when you present facts.

God, we're just getting dumber and dumber as a society.

It's not a movie. It's a crystal ball into our future.

Love al jazeera news network. Very well balanced. And show everything, not just their spin.

I would disagree, I'd say we always have been and will be biased. Think of every war that ever happened, we hate those guys because they're evil and we're good! They eat their children! They have sex with animals! Let's wipe them out! It's certainly nothing new.

But now that's spread to subjects within our border. We're applying a fiercer loyalty to whatever side of the aisle we identify with than any of those crooked fuckers deserve.

We've turned into a country of lemmings. The sad thing is, there is no left or right, they're both run by the same puppet-masters.

The same monied interests that have been running this country for countless decades go from one side to the other, whichever way the wind blows, that's who they give their money to.

2008 election is a prime example. Yeah Obama was for change, but his benefactors sure as hell are not. Its more of the same, false hope.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
