Next purchase advice

Ok, my OGAM date just passed (one gun a month, handgun purchase, craptastic NJ law). I'm torn between a Beretta 92fs or a Mossberg tactical shotgun for home defense. I'm liking the Mossberg for ease of use but the handgun is easier for me to keep in a bedside dresser in a lock box. Shotgun would be in the closet, ammo for both in the dresser next to the bed.

Bonus for the Mossberg is with the extra cash I can pick up a Ruger 10/22 or a decent .22 rifle for plinking. Though I'm really itching for the Beretta and I have one permit to purchase a pistol good till July 3, so no rush to buy other than I want something for the house sometime soon.

Any thoughts? I have 2 kids so everything stays locked up either way so I'm not too worried about either choice for safety sake

if it's strictly for home defense, i would totally go with the shotgun. you never know what the situation might be and i wouldn't want to risk missing my shot at whoever is in my house if things get hairy. you might not have much time to aim right and one bullet may not do the job. a lot of people will tell you that a shotgun is best for home defense. all you have to do is point and shoot and chances are the a-hole will get perforated righteously.

Personally I would get the Beretta. You can shoot it at the range and also use it for home defense.

First gun I ever bought was a Remington 870 for home defense. I got bored with it as it just sat next to my bed and I would never shoot the thing, I ending up trading it . Now I keep a Glock 17 on the night stand and bring it to the range for plinking whenever I want. I just have a tendency to get rid of guns I do not shoot all the time.

I like the idea of point and shoot simplicity, but my other thought is I travel and I'd like to have something my wife can handle if I'm out of town and needs it. She's 5'2" so the shotgun might be a little hard for her to handle. Thinking the pistol is a better option there. Plus she'll have 15 rounds in the mag so if one rounds doesn't do the trick she'll have 14 more to try.

Though the point about getting bored with the Mossberg is a good one. I have the Rem Supermag for hunting and fun clay shooting, so the pistol might be fun for another range gun. Plus I can buy the .22 conversion kit for the Beretta and shoot it cheap like my Browning for range training.

Still stuck. Lottery winnings would fix all this crap, wouldn't they???

Shot a SIG in 9mm the other day at the range. Rental gun and it was filthy but shot ok. Had a failure to feed and a stovepipe in 50 rounds, so that's likely not a good sign. It's pretty much impossible to stovepipe a beretta. Might also look at a revolver for her, something smaller that she could hold easier Han the wide grip beretta.
