In my opinion, it used to be far better. For those of you unfamiliar with SummerFest, it is a 10 or 11 day music festival on the shore of Lake Michigan. There are a shitload of different stages (rock, country, classic rock, jazz, etc.) and then the main stage (the Marcus Ampitheater). At the smaller stages, acts start playing at 10am and gradually work up to the headliners (usually around 10pm).
What used to make it better was that you could see some pretty decent acts at the smaller stages (now it tends to be either local groups, one-hit wonders, and groups considerably past their prime). Tickets to see groups on the main stage used to always be under $20. I'm pretty sure I paid less than $20 each to see Soundgarden, Yes, Tom Petty, Metallica, Pearl Jam, and others. Now, the tickets cost as much as any concert (when I took Domo to see Rush last year, I think the tickets were $85 plus fees for each seat).
Also, food and beer cost a shitload. I think beer was up to $8 last year. Think about how much coin you'd drop on a hot summer day. Another also, after our long winters, you get to see a lot of dairy-fed Wisconsin women with skin the color of uncooked sausage wearing tube tops (if that's your thing).
