I got one for my mom for christmas and she only uses it for netflix instant. It works fine for that and is one of the cheaper options for someone who doesn't already have access. However I have spotted a couple other similar boxes of different brands that seem to do more than Roku.

If you have a ton of files on your local hard drives (rips into mp3s, mkv, isos, etc.) go with the WD TV Live Plus which can play all of those formats you have and do NF and Youtube. Using Playon software on a PC you can expand the amount on online content you can access with the box.

If you only want to access content from online sources (Hulu, NF, Amazon, Flixster, etc.) then go for the Roku. It doesn't do local files well, if at al.

For you or someone else?
I use a Samsung Bluray player for NF upstairs. In the basement 360 or PS3 work obviously.

360 is in the "Den" / man cave, I have a Vizio BR player that does NF which I moved from the BR to the LR when I sold my PS3.

Id like to be able to watch NF in the BR again, my wife is slowly getting seriously hooked on NF.

I know I saw a sony and a western digital both at costco--but if you just want it for netflix the Roku works pretty good. Plus, my mom is techologically living in about 1955 and can barely work her TV set--but she's caught on to the Roku pretty quickly.

Is it that important to purchase a box then for your bedroom? Couldn't you just use your other streaming devices in the house for that?

If your wife is sleeping, wouldn't you want to watch it in another room?

She's sleeping though. I think I may go have a conversation with my drywall instead. I have a better chance. :)
