Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Postby JohnnyHustler » August 26th, 2011, 2:28 pm

I picked this one up Wednesday night, and sat down last night to play it.

Wow.

I sat down last night at 10 thinking I'd get a quick feel for the game. Next time I looked at the clock, it was 12:45. I'm freaking dead tired today.

I'm 2 missions in the game, and I can say this much: The gun play is growing on me, but the interactions, stealth, and ability to approach a situation in multiple ways makes this game a ton of fun. This game seems to be fulfilling the promises that Alpha Protocol made and fell WAY short of achieving.

You're a security lead for a company that makes human augmentations (think the Six Million Dollar Man). This company is under fire from those who feel augmentation is evil (think Jenny McCarthy). You are nearly killed, and augmented as a result. You have to find whoever led the attack that nearly killed you, but you start to find things aren't as they seem. It's a fun mix of Action/RPG with a conspiracy thriller story behind it.

You can go into missions using stealth, or you can go in guns blazing. You can also choose how to handle boss battles - negotiation, coercion, or kick the shit out of them.

I really enjoyed the first one. I will have to subscribe to OnLive and give this a try. 8)

I played the first one twice, or maybe even three times. The flexibility in that game was mind-blowing. I think any given objective could be completed at least four different ways depending on your style of play.

That's a fairly liberal estimate.

From my understanding, you can utilize 3 strategies to complete a mission - all stealth, all combat, or a mixture of stealth and combat. I have no idea how many ways that creates to finish a mission, but it was interesting trying a mix. Even when going with combat, you have to be crafty. If you run and gun, you're screwed in the early missions, even on the lowest difficulty level.

I played this again last night. I re-started the game. The first time through I did the first mission with fighting. This time I decided to try stealth. The problem is, going with stealth I feel like i am missing TONS of shit because you can't get out and explore. This really sucks, because I'm sure not going to level up. I set off a couple of alarms, and had to knock out 2 guys so I don't even get the bonuses for completing a mission that way.

I feel almost like the game is too open-ended. I want to do it stealthwise but feel like i'm penalized for that, which makes me just want to run & gun which makes it like every other game. And the first time when I did try run&Gun it seemed really freaking hard.

So I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I LOVE the detail, there are individual magazines and books in the rooms. It's crazy amounts of detail which I love. But I don't like the idea of 'hey play how you want' and then 'if you don't play a certain way, you won't get all the cool shit'.

Finally got a chance to play and lovin it. I have been surprised at the level of humor in Newspapers/NPC conversations/radio, top notch so far. Gameplay took a bit to get used to trying the stealth approach, finally just decided to knock everyone out but it takes much longer. Probably the best in-game hacking mode I have seen. Great voice acting.

Yeah i found out my problem was my definition of 'stealth'. To me, that means sneaking past everyone and leaving no trace. But I guess the game wants you to knock everyone out and leave a trail of unconscious bodies. When I read up on it a bit I found that you get more XP for knocking people out than for killing them.

I did that too until I set of an alarm for the third time and said screw it. Then I noticed the amount of XP you get and decided to do it to everyone. Same thing with hacking not that you get a bunch of XP for that.
