AmazonCEO Jeff Bezos on Wednesday showed off the Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet computer , challenging Apple's iPad by extending its Kindle brand into the world of full-color, multipurpose devices.

Bezos also took the opportunity to show off a new line of Kindle e-readers with black-and-white screens and lower prices, further pressuring competitors like Barnes & Noble Inc. that are trying to break Amazon.com Inc.'s dominance in electronic book sales.

The Kindle Fire will go on sale Nov. 15. It's about half the size of the iPad, making it a close match with Barnes & Nobles Nook Color tablet, which came out last year. But while Barnes & Noble sees the Nook Color as jazzed-up e-reader, Amazon has broader goals for the Fire, as a platform for games, movies, music and other applications.

Saw this on the news this morning. Now I am half tempted by Amazon's device. There is one of those huge B&N stores with the coffee shop and such right down the street from us which makes the Nook a nice idea for me, but I was just going to get Rabb to help me hack it to Android anyway.

I think I will most likely end up with this. I love the fact that everything is backed up on/provided by the Amazon cloud. You will also be able to update it wirelessly (kick in the Apple crotch). You can have all music and movies directly from them without having to worry about eating up internal storage. I paid $150ish for what I have now and it is pretty much a piece of crap compared to this.

On the radio this morning they said the Fire will lack what made the Ipad so popular, which is apps. I find that hard to believe.

Initially, that will probably be the case. Android has less apps currently, and Amazon's specific build has fewer than Android overall. However, if anyone can pull together app designers to catch up, it's Amazon. I own an iPad and love it, but this may become tablet #2 in my house.

BTW...I believe that Apple will be adding wireless sync to iOS 5, so updated iPads will have the ability probably about the same time that this comes out.

It says "apps" right there in the description on Amazon.

I think maybe what the radio guy was referring to is that they wont' really have too many at startup. Sure the plan is to get apps rolling but you know that's what Apple is going to attack right off the bat.

I just checked out some information on the fire, and personally I just want to use my e-reader to read. I think I'm the only one who feels that way. If I wanted that other stuff I'd get a smart phone.

I put my name in the preorder queue and will have 6 weeks to decide if this is something I really want. There are a few features I really wish this had, such as an SD card slot and the ability to play various video codecs so I could watch my own movies. No .epub support is another bummer. But also, I have a friend who knows a guy whose cousin has about 1600 .apk files (Android apps/games) that I doubt will run on the fire, given its customized version of the Droid OS.

If you are planning on just going Amazon for things, I am sure it's awesome. Honestly, after hacking my Nook Color, I have full access to the android market in addition to what the thing already did (epub, sd card, movies, etc.)

Mine is running Android and while there are definitely things I see on ipad I wish I could get, I've been happy overall. Hopefully this will be the spark that is needed to kickstart the Android market devs. They will sell a ton of these because a)reputation b)access c)price point.

I read yesterday that apple reduced production orders in recent weeks. Could be smoke screen but if true its very telling.

So now the Nook Tablet is slated for release for the holidays. They dropped the price of Nook color by $50 and put this thing in its place. I'll be interested to find out if it's just a hacked Nook Color or if there's some unique functionality.

The Nook Tablet has arrived just in time for the holiday shopping season and it comes with a price tag of just $249.

Unveiled on Monday in New York City the device is $50 more expensive then Amazon’s Kindle Fire but also features more memory, a far better display and a larger selection of in-store services and content.



The Nook table comes standard with a 16GB hard drive (double the Amazon Kindle Fire) with an option for 32GB while also offering a 7-inch display that runs Google Android via a 1Ghz processor with 1GB RAM and free cloud service along with access to the Nook newsstand and comics.

The Nook tablet also offers 11.5 hours reading time on a single charge with nine hours video playback.

Along with their new tablet Barnes & Noble also dropped the price of the original Nook Color to just $199 while the Nook SimpleTouch is just $99.

So did anyone get the Kindle Fire? I've read some mostly positive but mixed reviews so far.

We ordered one for the in-laws that should be in some time next week. I'm going to open it to configure it for them and will post impressions.
