Tailgate365 recently had the opportunity to catch up with Sacramento State linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo as he prepares for the upcoming NFL Draft. Thanks to Shawn Smith at XAM Sports for helping us put it together.
TG365 - Where are you working out and who are some of the players you are training with?
CM - I am working out with Mike Gough at Athletic Edge. A couple of the guys I have been training with are: Eugene Monroe, CJ Spillman, Derek Walker, Chris Baker, and Phillip Hunt. All of these guys are hard workers, and we push each other everyday to reach our full potential.
TG365 - What are your workout numbers?
CM - I rep 225lbs 22x; 4.0 20 yrd shuttle; 6.7 3-cone; 11.0 60 yrd shuttle, and 34 in vert.
TG365 - How much of an honor was it to be named All Big Sky Conference First Team?
CM - It is a tremendous honor to receive 1st Team All Big Sky for two consecutive years. I set high expectations for myself and do not settle for less, but I have played with great talent around me that elevated my play, so much credit is due to them.
TG365 - Who was the best player you faced in your career?
CM - Some of the names that pop out to me over my career are Marshawn Lynch and Ryan Clady.
TG365 - What will be the biggest adjustment going from the Big Sky to the NFL?
CM - One of the biggest adjustments from the Big Sky to the NFL is the size of lineman. In the Big Sky or any FCS school, granted you'll have one or two players that are 6'7, 6'8 but in the league, that’s a norm. On top of that, you'll have depth with players that size. That’s another adjustment as well, the depth of the players and talented players at that.
TG365 - When you were growing up, what NFL team did you dream of playing for?
CM - Growing up I couldn’t stop watching the San Francisco 49ers. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Ricky Waters, those guys were legends back in my day. I grew up imitating Ken Norton Jr. and his play until Ray Lewis burst onto the scene. But now… I follow my cousin Edwin Mulitalo and my other friends who are in the league.
TG365 - Living in Baltimore, I was lucky enough see your cousin Edwin's great Ravens career. Has he been offering any advice as you prepare for the draft?
CM - Ed has been a great help to me throughout this whole process. He helped me with my agent selection… X-A-M sports baby! He also recommended me to the gym I’m working out now, and allowed me to stay at his house that is couple miles down the road. So he has always been there to talk about my progress with training and guiding me in pursuit of my dreams to the NFL.
TG365 - What would we find on your I pod?
CM - You will find a lot of Reggae music and Samoan Jams on there.
TG365 - And now we want to give you a chance to brag a little with a simple question. Cyrus Mulitalo, why are you so awesome?
CM - I wouldn’t call it awesome, I would simply call it blessed. I have been blessed to be successful playing football since the age of eight until the present day. God has blessed me to be very instinctive. I have also been put in situations to overcome adversity as well as the “haters” in this world, and I could say, I have been blessed to conquer that also.
