ESPN ranks top franchises of all major league sports teams
Thursday, 09 July 2009 14:25

Congrats to the Carolina Hurricanes organization and its fans for the #1 hockey franchise and #2 overall ranking from ESPN The Magazine's 2009 Ultimate Standings among all major  league sports teams (122 teams to be exact).

The ranking was based on how much a franchise gives back to the fans in exchange for time, money, and fan support.  "Bang For The Buck", "Affordability", "Stadium Experience", and "Fan Relations" all attribute to each team's score over 8 categories.

I've witnessed firsthand how the Hurricanes treat and respond to their fans and support the surrounding area and am proud to be part of the Caniac nation.  Congrats.

The top 10 looks like this:

1. Los Angeles Angels

2. Carolina Hurricanes

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

4. Detroit Red Wings

5. Clevland Cavaliers

6. Washington Capitals

7. Milwaukee Brewers

8. Pittsburgh Penguins

9. San Antonio Spurs

10. St. Louis Blues

Incase you're wondering, both the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Sabres actually made this list.....

Curious to see how you guys feel about your local teams. The Caps definitely get it. Ted Leonsis is one of the best owners in sports and seems to do everything possible for the fans. One of the things I love is that he worked with local bloggers to get them a spot in the press box. He truly gets it.

My Ravens didn't break the top 10 but still a good experience. My complaint with them is that they keep raising ticket prices in a very tight economy. I think they were one of only a few teams who did that this year. We have a great stadium and fan base plus the team is winning so that helps lessen the blow I guess.

The O's....not even going there. Great stadium, weary fan base and a team that is FINALLY showing some promise. You can pretty much get free tickets b/c people are always giving them away. Ownership...hahahahaha.

That's why started with mentioning the Canes organization.

General practices are open to the public and many players will stick around for pics or autographs afterwards. Season ticket packages as well as mini-game packs can be purchased 2yrs ahead at the same current prices. Like most major sports teams there is a effort to help local disabilities and events geared towards children (Kids 'N Community Foundation) along with other local charities. The RBC Center and its staff are first class.
GM Jim Rutherford even listens to the fan's voice to bring back players (welcome back Erik Cole) who were fan favorites.

There is just a general sense of pride (yeah, we tailgate at a hockey game too) in the team even at the toughest of times. Glad to see the organization get acknowledged.
