It has been a little over a month since Michael Oher stood on stage with Roger Goodell with a Ravens hat on holding up a purple jersey. Since then, Oher hasn’t missed a practice, in fact, at one point he was practicing with the first, second and third team offense due to injuries.
Except Oher hasn’t done everything just yet. Oher has yet to sign a contact.
But the Ravens aren’t worried, Oher has said all the right things that he has every intention of being at the first day of training camp on July 27.
“I’m going to sit down and talk with my agent this week to see where we’re at, I’m not the type of guy for a holdout. I love football and want to keep getting better as fast as I can. That starts with training camp. I’m going to leave it up to him [agent Jimmy Sexton], but I don’t want it to get too out of hand. I want to be there to play from the start.”
You all may remember the debacle Oakland had a few years ago when prima donna JaMarcus Russell decided that he was too good for a contract with Oakland, in all honesty he probably was but it was still a dick move. Sign your contact and get out on the field and prove why you deserve a better one the next go round.
But that’s the difference between the Ravens in Oakland. Character. The Ravens do not draft arrogant pricks like Russell, at least not in the first round. The last ‘holdout’ the Ravens had was when Ngata missed one day of training camp before inking his deal in 2005.
Baltimore is not worried about Oher and the rest of the little tikes not being signed yet, according to director of player personnel Eric DeCosta, it will get done some time before training camp starts, I would hope so.
“If you look at when we’ve gotten our deals done, they typically come in bunches, especially as we get closer to training camp. The biggest thing is that we’re not in a rush to do it. You have to do your homework and get both sides to talk a lot about the process.”
