I find the whole Ray Lewis situation comical. He rejects the Baltimore Ravens’ generous offer for him to return as the face of the franchise, thinking he would get a better contract in free agency. Declaring your own worth and greed prior to entering free agency at soon to be 34 years old seems to hurt your stock. It did look to work out for Hayneworth who gave the exact digits he’s looking for, but I see Haynesworth and Lewis as different players. It seems as though Lewis flourished this season with his oversized “space eater” defensive tackle, and even then, some say Lewis’ play declined near the end of the season. Either way, the teams looking for a linebacker and seemed most likely to pursue Lewis failed to act. Instead, Rex Ryan, former defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens who coached Lewis, seemed to prefer to pick up Bart Scott for the New York Jets. Does that tell you anything about how he sees Ray Lewis? Lewis’ other team of interest, the Dallas Cowboys, did not share the interest as well. Not only do the Dallas Cowboys not have the cap room to sign Lewis, but they also did not seem interested in him altogether.
