Marvin Harrison

So it looks like Marvin Harrison is soon to be an ex Colt and will be asking for his release.  The Colts would take a $13.4 million cap hit on Marvin with him earning close to $9 million this season and would like to talk about lowering that number.  Apparently Marvin does not want to negotiate his deal down which brings me to another session of, “Are you kidding me?”

Now Marvin, just between us here friend.  I know you have been a great player and being from Philly makes me want to be on your side.  But my friend, you are 36 years old (turning 37) and I hate to tell you this but your better days have come and gone.  Hell, I am only a few weeks older than you, not in the shape you are but it can’t be fun getting hit as you do on a weekly basis.

Ok, ok I get it you still feel you can be a productive receiver in the NFL and don’t want to retire but let’s look at some numbers here.  From 1999 through 2006 you missed 2 total games, had over 1,000 yards receiving each year, and had double digit touchdown catches.  In 2007 you were hurt (and killed me on my fantasy team) playing in only 5 games.  2008 came and fantastic – you played in 15 games!  But you only had 60 receptions for 636 yards with 5 touchdowns.

Hey, the NFL is not a fair business a team can come in and cut you at any time I get that.  But Marvin, the Colts don’t want you at that price.  So instead of letting your ego get the best of you suck it up and renegotiate!

Look at the alternative, the Colts release you and you are a free agent.  What team is going to take a $13.4 million cap hit for your services at this point of your career?  What team is going to have Peyton Manning as their quaterback?  Getting the point here?  The grass is not greener elsewhere!

So Marvin, “Are you kidding me?”
